In this video, I’m showing you how I create structure, texture, and sharp edges in my painting using painter’s tape and modelling paste. Step 1 - Creating the shape I start by placing painter’s tape on the canvas to create a simple form. The tape helps define the shape and gives me clean, sharp edges. Step 2 - Adding the modelling paste I apply modelling paste over and around the taped area. I build it up gradually, rather than applying one thick layer, which allows me to create more dimension and control the final texture. Step 3 - Removing the tape While the modelling paste is still wet, I carefully pull away the painter’s tape. This reveals the sharp edges and defined shape underneath. Step 4 - Refining the edges After removing the tape, I go back in and adjust the modelling paste where needed. I soften or sharpen certain areas and clean up the edges to get the structure I want. This creates the foundation for the next stage of the painting. Follow along for Part 2, where I’ll show you how I start working with the first layer of paint and build on this texture and structure.
