Online facilitation requires much more than presenting slides to a virtual audience. This lesson explains how facilitators can monitor learner engagement, understanding and support needs when body language and other classroom cues are less visible. It explores how to interpret chat contributions, reactions, hand raises and camera feeds carefully, while recognising that silence does not automatically indicate disengagement. You will learn practical ways to check understanding without interrupting the flow of teaching, including polls, quizzes, quick reactions and chat-based takeaway prompts. The lesson also covers active chat management, co-host support, clear activity instructions and empathetic responses when learners experience technical difficulties. Finally, it examines how attendance, participation, poll and breakout-room data can be reviewed after a session to identify disengagement trends, pacing issues and opportunities for targeted support. The overall focus is on creating an inclusive online learning environment through continuous observation and responsive facilitation.
