Chausson X650. A motorhome with the dimensions of a campervan (almost)

The Chausson X650 is a compact motorhome based on the Fiat Ducato. In this video, we look at the layout, dimensions, mechanical specification, equipment and storage, and compare it with several similar compact motorhomes. The layout is based around a large front lounge, an electric drop-down bed, a central kitchen and bathroom, and a rear storage area. One of the main features of the X650 is Chausson's Smart Dressing Room, or SDR. The rear wardrobe can be moved vertically, allowing the available space beneath it to be used differently depending on whether the priority is clothing storage or carrying larger items. The rear area is therefore quite different from the fixed garage found on many larger motorhomes. The available space can be adapted according to what is being carried, which is particularly relevant for bicycles, camping equipment, tools and other bulky items. Chausson X650 vs X550 The X550 is the closest comparison within the Chausson range. The X550 is 5.99 metres long, compared with 6.36 metres for the X650. Both are 2.10 metres wide and 2.75 metres high, and both are designed around four travelling seats and four berths. The additional 37 centimetres of the X650 mainly goes towards the rear wardrobe and storage arrangement. The X550 is therefore more compact, while the X650 provides more storage flexibility. Chausson X650 vs other compact motorhomes The X650 can also be compared with vehicles such as the Adria Compact Max SP and Knaus Tourer Van. The Adria Compact Max SP is approximately 6.46 metres long and 2.17 metres wide, so it occupies a similar length category but is wider than the X650. The Knaus Tourer Van represents a somewhat different approach. The Tourer Van 500 LT is around 5.89 metres long and is based on a Volkswagen platform, placing it closer to the campervan end of the market. The X650 therefore sits between a conventional panel-van camper and a larger low-profile motorhome. Its dimensions are relatively modest, but the interior layout is intended to provide a more conventional motorhome environment.
