The Muster captures the process of mustering cattle from the air in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory. Filmed without dialogue and accompanied only by music, the footage follows cattle being gathered across the vast landscape, offering a visual record of pastoral work in regional Australia. Produced by the Australian Commonwealth Film Unit, the film was directed by acclaimed cinematographer and director Donald McAlpine, whose distinguished career would later include many of Australia's best-known feature films. This film is part of the NFSA's Regional Australia collection, exploring the places, communities and landscapes captured by Film Australia across the country. The Australian Diary Series (1947–1970) records aspects of everyday life, industry and production in mid 20th century Australia.
