The Roman Ruins Hidden in New Orleans | Piazza d'Italia

🏛️ What looks like ancient Roman ruins in the middle of downtown New Orleans is actually one of the city's most unique landmarks. Piazza d'Italia was completed in 1978 as a tribute to the generations of Italian immigrants who helped shape New Orleans into the city we know today. From its towering columns and arches to the famous fountain designed in the shape of Italy, every part of this monument tells the story of a community whose influence can still be seen throughout the city. 🇮🇹 During the late 1800s and early 1900s, thousands of Italian immigrants—many of them from Sicily—made New Orleans their new home. Large numbers settled in what became known as Little Palermo, creating thriving neighborhoods filled with family-owned businesses, markets, restaurants, churches, and social clubs. Their hard work helped transform New Orleans, leaving a lasting impact on its food, architecture, music, commerce, and culture that can still be experienced today. ⚖️ This story also includes one of the darkest chapters in American history. In 1890, New Orleans Police Chief David Hennessy was assassinated, and suspicion quickly fell on members of the city's Italian community. Although several Italian men were acquitted or their trials ended in mistrials, an angry mob stormed the Orleans Parish Prison on March 14, 1891, and lynched 11 Italian men. It remains the largest documented mass lynching in United States history and sparked an international diplomatic crisis between the United States and Italy.
