Throat singing Highlights from 2025

THROAT SINGING HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2025🌬️ 2025 was a year full of new experiences and developments related to throat singing, which I hope will continue in 2026 and the coming years. To start the first two big performances of the (then still unnamed) group ‘Sugda Chalgyg’ took place. Sugda Chalgyg consists of Frodi Fransman and me, and focuses fully on Tuvan music. It was great to see our repertoire grow this year from only the most famous Tuvan songs to include more rare songs. We truly started and are still developing our own sound as we explore our collaboration, which will continue very soon. In the spring I held a two-day throat singing workshop together with Frodi & Rowan Hartsuiker, which was very fun and taught me a lot. At the end of the summer the first European throat singing festival, Echoes of the Steppe, took place in Switzerland. It was amazing to meet so many amateur and professional throat singers and to even compete with them in the competition. The competition resulted in me receiving one of the prizes, “Rising star of throat singing”, which I am still very thankful for. We will see what the 2026 edition will bring. One of the best things about the world of throat singing to me is the ease of meeting truly influential people. I am honoured to have met and even learned from people like Igor Köshkendei, Dalai Damdyn, Naidan Dongak, Choldug Köshkendei and the members of Huun-Huur-Tu. This was the first year that I got to play with all of these people and truly spend some time with them. Not only playing together with them, but also hearing these people sing and play their instruments without a microphone from only a meter distance is so incredible and insightful.
