According to testimony from alleged cartel-linked businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, Police Minister Senzo Muchunu allegedly wanted Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo removed as head of Crime Intelligence and replaced by his deputy, Major-General Feroz Khan. Matlala was questioned by evidence leader Advocate Mahlape Sello about his alleged relationship with Brown Mogotsi, the businessman and political fixer whose name has repeatedly surfaced in the commission’s investigation. According to Matlala, Beki believed Mogotsi was close to Muchunu. And that alleged connection became important because Matlala said Beki believed Mogotsi could provide a route to the police minister. But why would Matlala be involved? According to his testimony, the answer was money. Matlala told the commission that Mogotsi introduced himself as someone from Muchunu’s office. Matlala said he did not trust him. Yet despite that lack of trust, he gave Mogotsi 150,000 rand and even paid for his flights.
