THE MECCA PACT: SAUDI ARABIA’S DESPERATE GAMBLE TO CONTAIN ANSARALLAH By Saurabh Shahi The Yemen ceasefire collapsed months ago. Saudi Arabia fears the conflict could cross its own southern border with Yemen. The real nightmare for Riyadh is a northward push by Ansarallah towards Jizan and Najran—areas with deep tribal and historical links to Yemen. If the fighting spills across the border, could local tribal loyalties turn a war in Yemen into an internal security crisis for the Kingdom? In response, Saudi Arabia has invoked the Mecca Pact, bringing Turkey and Pakistan into a broader security arrangement. 👉🏽 But is this a genuine collective defence strategy—or a desperate attempt by Riyadh to contain a conflict that is increasingly moving beyond its control? For Riyadh, the objective is clear: build a defensive shield around Saudi territory while keeping pressure on Ansarallah. But the political messaging around the conflict is equally important. Riyadh fears that a military advance across the border could create space for local alliances to emerge.
