Step into the riveting tale of two brothers, torn apart by the harsh realities of Girmit, their destinies shrouded in mystery. This captivating YouTube video unravels the extraordinary journey of separation, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds that transcend time. During the era of Girmit, two brothers were taken to unknown destinations, their fates intertwined yet veiled in secrecy. The younger sibling was sent to Fiji, where he spent 14 years building his life amidst the Pacific islands before eventually returning to India. Meanwhile, the elder brother remained a phantom, his whereabouts lost to history, his story clouded in uncertainty. Their separation echoed through time until, after a century, an unexpected reunion brought their fragmented history back into focus. This video also features an emotional interview with the grandson of the brother who came to Fiji and later returned to India. He shares the poignant story of his grandfather’s disappearance and, ultimately, his return—bringing to light the long-lost chapters of their family’s journey. ************************** My sincere thanks to the following people whose contributions helped me tell this story: Krishna Kumar Pathak - Grandson of Bhawani Bhik, who was brought to Fiji as an indentured labourer and later returned to India. Krishna contacted me through YouTube after watching my other Girmit videos, shared his grandfather’s story and connected me with Balliram Maharaj in Trinidad. Balliram Maharaj - Grandson of Bhawani Bhik’s brother, Changa Maharaj who was taken to Trinidad as an indentured labourer and never returned to India. Balliram generously shared his biography, The Tomato Boy – Life and Lessons of Balliram Maharaj, written by Shamshu Deen, providing an invaluable source for this video. Shamshu Deen - Genealogist from Trinidad and author of Balliram Maharaj’s biography. My thanks for his work in helping families trace their ancestral roots and for granting permission to include an excerpt from his speech at the book’s launch. *************************** Historical Records - National Archives of Fiji *************************** Folk song: Bhikari Thakur's (1912) Bidesia Singer: Aleshni Sharma Artist: Priya Sharma *************************** Link to Shamshu Deen's interview on BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct...
