Look around any modern car and it's easy to forget how much of it was invented in 1960s America. Automatic climate control, auto-dimming high beams, animated turn signals — this piece of car history starts with vintage American cars that had them all decades early.
In this video we count down 17 genius features from classic cars of the 1960s that were years ahead of their time: the Ford Thunderbird's swing-away steering wheel and push-button convertible top, Cadillac's Comfort Control, Guide-Matic and Twilight Sentinel, the Buick Riviera's hidden clamshell headlights, Chrysler's push-button transmission and glowing AstraDome dash, the Mercury Cougar's sequential turn signals, the Oldsmobile Toronado's drum speedometer and flat floor, the Rambler that turned into a bed, and more. Some became standard on every car you drive today. Some vanished for fifty years — and came back sold to us as the future.
Did your family own one of these cars? Tell us in the comments which feature you remember — and send this video to the person who drove it.
