Day 7 of 100 Days of Random Learning.
Growing up, I heard so many things about convulsions. Put a spoon in their mouth so they don't swallow their tongue. Or worse, that it's a spiritual problem. Today I actually learnt what causes it, and it's not that at all.
Your brain controls every movement you make. Convulsions happen when it fires off too many signals at once, so the whole body is being told to move at the same time and different muscle groups end up pulling against each other. That's the shaking. That's all it is.
But the part that mattered most to me was learning what to actually do, because I had it wrong too. You never hold someone down and you never put anything in their mouth. You clear the space around them, cushion their head, and turn them on their side so their airway stays clear. Then you stay with them until they're fully alert.
And you can't swallow your tongue. It's not possible.
If someone convulses near you, they need help, not distance.
