This video walks through the actual science of why human skin color varies, starting with the work of Nina Jablonski and George Chaplin on UV radiation mapping. The short version: your body is constantly negotiating between protecting folate and making Vitamin D. But here's what caught me off guard. Ancient DNA from European skeletons shows that people lived at northern latitudes for thousands of years without developing the pale skin we associate with those regions today. The light skin variants spread recently. Like, shockingly recently.
And it gets stranger. Light skin evolved multiple times, in different populations, through completely different genetic pathways. East Asian populations, Europeans, even some East African groups all arrived at lighter pigmentation independently. It's not one ancient split.
