Experience real and authentic African village life as Mama Jane prepares a delicious traditional lunch of silver fish (mukene) and posho for her family. ❤️🐟🏡 Welcome back to African Family Homestead, where we share our everyday family life, traditional African cooking, farming and the simple beauty of living in a rural Ugandan village. 🇺🇬❤️ Today, our afternoon begins at 12:12 PM as Mama Jane cleans and organizes the outdoor cooking area in preparation for lunch. She then collects some silver fish, locally known as mukene, and carefully sorts them before cooking. Meanwhile, Taata Musa is busy splitting firewood to help prepare the cooking fire. Moses and Ismail also lend a helping hand by washing the family’s cooking utensils. ❤️ After preparing everything, Mama Jane washes the cooking pan and begins chopping fresh ingredients, including onions, tomatoes and green pepper. She lights the fire, places the cooking pan over it and adds cooking oil. Once the oil is hot, she adds the onions, followed by tomatoes and green pepper, allowing the ingredients to cook together. Mama Jane then washes the silver fish and adds them to the pan. She seasons the meal with salt, adds water and leaves everything to simmer until the fish is ready. 🐟❤️ With the silver fish cooked, Mama Jane begins preparing posho, a traditional East African staple made from maize flour and water. She heats water over the fire and gradually adds maize flour, stirring and mixing until the posho becomes thick and ready to serve. Once lunch is ready, Mama Jane serves the delicious silver fish and freshly prepared posho. The family then gathers together on their traditional mat to enjoy a simple homemade African village lunch. ❤️🍽️ These are the beautiful moments we treasure at African Family Homestead. Working together, preparing food over a wood fire and sharing a meal as one family remind us of the happiness found in simple everyday village life.
