South Australia's Busiest Railway Reopens after Level Crossing Testing

The section of track between Crystal Brook and Coonamia is South Australia's busiest section of railway anywhere in the state and also the only section on the Standard Gauge mainline that is Double Track for more than 5 kilometers. Track closures for the Abattoirs Road level crossing upgrade and signal hut commissioning, right in the middle of this busy double-track section, would normally delay freight traffic. However, careful planning by track owner ARTC meant the works were scheduled to finish just before the next wave of freight trains was due, allowing services to continue with minimal disruption. A late-running Aurizon 5AD1 was the only train delayed, held for several hours before becoming the first service through after the line reopened. It's seen near Crystal Brook at the southern end of the double-track section along with Aurizon's 8102S to Adelaide shortly afterwards. At the northern end of the double track, Pacific National's 4PS6 crosses an empty ballast train transfer, before the ballast train is seen again later near the scenic Mambray Creek alongside the Flinders Rangers.
