Bob Dylan & Donovan: The Moment I Realized Dylan Is the Master | “Baby Blue” Analysis

Bob Dylan and Donovan. Two extraordinary songwriters. One hotel room. And one performance of “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” that completely stopped me in my tracks. This video was a viewer request, and I'm so glad I watched it—because this encounter between Bob Dylan and Donovan in 1965 helped ignite my obsession with a song that would eventually become incredibly important to me. In D. A. Pennebaker's Dont Look Back, the young Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan performs “To Sing for You” in Dylan's hotel room. Then Donovan asks Dylan to play “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.” What happens next is fascinating. I couldn't stop watching Dylan. The confidence. The command. The way the atmosphere seems to change when he begins playing. To me, this is a veteran meeting the talented rookie younger brother. Donovan was only 19, while Dylan was 23 and already several years into his recording career. The British press had been actively comparing the two young songwriters, even casting Donovan as a kind of “British Dylan.” And yet I don't want to reduce this remarkable scene to Bob Dylan vs. Donovan or decide that Dylan was deliberately trying to humiliate him. In fact, that's part of what makes the footage so interesting. Donovan himself asks to hear “Baby Blue,” and Dylan had just complimented Donovan's song. The scene has nevertheless been interpreted for decades as Dylan dramatically upstaging his younger counterpart. Because for me, this isn't simply an interesting piece of Bob Dylan history. “It's All Over Now, Baby Blue” was the song that opened the door. It helped begin my journey into Dylan's music—and ultimately into understanding why Bob Dylan's music helped heal my heart. That's what Music Found Me is about.
