Why did Nokia really fail? In 2007, by its own estimates, Nokia sold nearly four in ten phones on Earth and about half of all smartphones. In February 2011, its new CEO's "burning platform" memo leaked to the press.
Inside Nokia, some knew the iPhone was coming about a year before it arrived. So why did it take so long to say it out loud?
This Boardroom Mind case file opens Nokia's own SEC filings, then goes inside: a peer-reviewed study built on 76 interviews with about 50 insiders, and the meetings where bad news stopped climbing. Off the books, our read has a name in management research: organizational silence.

Figures marked "our calc." are our own calculations from these sources. R&D: EUR 2,879 M × 1.3705 (ECB 2007 average, USD per EUR) = about USD 3,946 M, 5.05 times Apple's USD 782 M (4.9 using the average rate over Apple's fiscal year). Apple's figure covers the whole company. Smartphone shares for 2007 to Q1 2009 are our calc. from Nokia's unit estimates.
