Mexico executed Emperor Maximilian I in 1867. His wife, Empress Carlota, lived until 1927 - nearly sixty years after the Second Mexican Empire collapsed. This documentary follows the French-backed Habsburg monarchy from Miramar and Chapultepec through the Black Decree, Napoleon III’s withdrawal, Benito Juárez’s Republican victory, Querétaro, Maximilian’s trial and execution, and Carlota’s long life at Bouchout Castle. At the center is Article Two of the 1865 imperial statute, which named Carlota Regent if Maximilian could no longer rule. When that moment came, there was almost no empire left to govern. ========= Chapters: 00:00 Two Endings 02:36 A Crown Built on Borrowed Power 09:01 The Empress Inside Government 13:54 The Crown With No Safe Position 19:46 Two Sides of the Atlantic 24:56 The Emperor Without France 31:58 The Regent With No Empire ========= Source: Habsburgs on the Rio Grande: The Rise and Fall of the Second Mexican Empire - Raymond Jonas, 2024 The Last Emperor of Mexico: The Dramatic Story of the Habsburg Archduke Who Created a Kingdom in the New World - Edward Shawcross, 2021 Estatuto Provisional del Imperio Mexicano - Imperial Government of Mexico, 1865 Decree of October 3, 1865 - Maximilian I of Mexico, 1865 Foreign Relations of the United States, 1867, Part II - U.S. Department of State, 1867 Cedulario del Alcázar - Museo Nacional de Historia / INAH, n.d. The channel is made for viewers who enjoy royal history but want more than family trees, palace gossip, or simple rise-and-fall biographies. Each episode follows the political, legal, and human consequences of losing a throne, using archival records, published scholarship, historic photographs, and surviving places and objects. Our goal is to make complex royal history clear without flattening it into legend, while focusing on the overlooked years after courts, titles, and empires stop functioning. ========= Disclaimer: This video is an educational historical documentary based on published scholarship, archival materials, museum collections, legal documents, and contemporary records. Where historical accounts conflict or later anecdotes cannot be verified, disputed details are treated cautiously rather than presented as settled fact. Historical images, quotations, and documents are included for commentary, education, criticism, and documentary context. The video explains the political beliefs and institutions of the period without endorsing monarchy, imperialism, colonial intervention, or any political ideology. #MaximilianOfMexico #EmpressCarlota #SecondMexicanEmpire #MexicanHistory #ThronesUnmade
