Mr. Vegas shares the story behind “Here Comes the Boom”, his collaboration with DMX and Sean Paul.
Producer Tony Kelly had been commissioned to create music for the movie Belly. He brought Mr. Vegas and Sean Paul into the studio and had already prepared much of the structure and concept.
DMX later arrived, asked for the beat and recorded his section in one take. Mr. Vegas remembers being amazed by DMX’s intensity and ability to perform immediately. Mr. Vegas and Sean Paul were later featured in the film as well.
Music as an escape from childhood abuse
Mr. Vegas reveals that he frequently ran away from home as a very young child in Jamaica. He experienced serious physical abuse from older siblings. When he escaped, he spent time around local sound systems.
Those sound systems gave him a place of comfort. Music was not initially a calculated career choice; it was a form of emotional refuge. It protected him mentally when his home environment did not feel safe.
