Authorities in Musanze have issued a new update following the devastating fire that engulfed GOICO Plaza, one of the city’s largest commercial complexes. On Sunday morning, October 11, 2026, Musanze District Mayor Claudien Nsengimana visited the scene alongside security officials. He comforted traders and residents affected by the disaster and confirmed that no deaths had been recorded. The mayor urged residents to remain calm and continue with their normal activities instead of gathering around the damaged building. He also warned traders and members of the public not to enter GOICO Plaza without official authorization, explaining that the restriction is necessary to protect lives and allow emergency teams to complete their work safely. The fire reportedly began at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Saturday and spread across several sections of the multi-storey building. Police, soldiers and other emergency responders worked throughout the night. By early Sunday morning, the flames had substantially reduced, although smoke continued to emerge from parts of the structure and firefighters remained at the scene extinguishing hotspots. According to preliminary local updates, 17 people experienced severe emotional distress and were taken to Ruhengeri Hospital, while one person sustained an injury. No fatalities were reported. The authorities have not yet announced the confirmed cause of the fire or the complete value of the property and merchandise destroyed. GOICO Plaza was constructed in 2017 by Gorilla Investment Company, an association of 89 private investors from Musanze. Its reported construction cost was approximately RWF 7.5 billion. The complex accommodated more than 2,000 traders and hosted clothing shops, technology businesses, banks, supermarkets and several other commercial services. Watch this report for the latest images from Musanze, the mayor’s message to affected traders and the continuing emergency operation at GOICO Plaza.
