Is Mark 9:42 to 48 really about eternal torture? Jesus talks about cutting off your hand, unquenchable fire, and a worm that never dies. But the word he uses isn't "hell." It's Gehenna, the Valley of Hinnom outside Jerusalem. Read in its context in Mark 9:33 to 50, this passage looks like a warning about abusing power over the vulnerable.
If hell has been used to scare or control you, this breakdown is for you. We look at why verses 44 and 46 are missing from your Bible, what happened in the Valley of Hinnom (2 Chronicles 28:3, 33:6, Jeremiah 19), why the "burning trash dump" explanation doesn't hold up, and how Jesus uses Isaiah 66:24. Here's my argument, and I'd love to hear where you land. What do you think hell is?

Whisky and the Writings is a subsidiary of Stories of TOV.
Our Mission at Stories of TOV is to empower others to find wholeness from God; through right relationships with others, and the rediscovery of His story.
1. We will produce engaging content—through video, audio, and written formats—that thoughtfully shares our perspectives on God and the Bible, inviting deeper exploration and understanding.
2. We believe people today are seeking a fresh perspective on who God is and what He’s doing in the world. As traditional church structures continue to decline, many are looking for new ways to connect with God and each other outside of those frameworks. With this in mind, we will establish local gatherings where individuals can take the next step in their faith. These gatherings will foster conversations in non-traditional environments, meeting people where they are and engaging with them in meaningful ways.
