What Happened to Factory Water Wheels? The Machines That Powered America Before Steam Took Over

#IndustrialHistory #ForgottenMachinery #MechanicalEngineering What happened to factory water wheels, the massive machines that powered America's earliest factories before steam engines transformed industrial manufacturing? Discover how factory water wheels harnessed the power of flowing rivers, why they became essential to early American industry, and how these remarkable mechanical systems helped launch the Industrial Revolution. Before steam engines dominated American manufacturing, enormous water wheels powered textile mills, sawmills, machine shops, and factories across the country. Explore how factory water wheels converted flowing water into mechanical power using giant wooden wheels, iron gears, rotating shafts, and complex belt-driven machinery. Discover how early American engineers designed overshot, undershot, and breastshot water wheels to operate heavy industrial equipment without electricity or steam power. Learn why factories were built alongside rivers, how water-powered transmission systems distributed mechanical energy throughout entire buildings, and what made these machines so important to America's industrial growth. Follow the rise and decline of traditional factory water wheels as steam engines, water turbines, and eventually electric motors transformed industrial power generation. From massive wooden water wheels and historic textile mills to forgotten industrial gear systems, this is the fascinating story of the machines that helped build American industry before steam took over.
