History remembers the Bazooka as the little tube that could not kill a Tiger. The German army remembered it differently: they captured one in Tunisia in 1943, studied it, and built a bigger copy, the Panzerschreck. The enemy paid the design the highest compliment there is.
This is why the Bazooka was actually a genius design: built in weeks in 1942 by two officers using scrap parts and a coat-hanger sight, ordered by General Marshall on the spot, and in combat by Operation Torch. It could not stop a Tiger from the front, and the video is honest about that. But Tigers were rare. The Bazooka killed what the average GI actually faced: Panzer IVs, StuGs, halftracks, bunkers and pillboxes from Normandy to Okinawa. Captain Matt Urban earned the Medal of Honor knocking out two tanks with one in the Normandy hedgerows. For the first time in modern war, one rifleman carried real anti-tank power on his back, and infantry combat never went back.
