The Bozeman boom is over. I'll walk through how much things really slowed before getting into why roughly 1,200 people a year still move into Gallatin County. I cover the photonics and optics industry most people outside the valley have never heard of, the defense plant going up by Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, the hospital's ten-year expansion plan, and what a household needs to earn to buy a home here today. If you're thinking about moving to Bozeman or relocating to the Gallatin Valley, I'll show you exactly how I would make your decision of whether your should move.

Why are people still moving to Bozeman, Montana?
People are still moving to Bozeman, Montana because the things that drew them here kept growing after the housing frenzy ended. Gallatin County has added residents every year since the 2020 Census, close to 10,000 in all. The economy behind those numbers runs on optics and photonics, Montana State University research, healthcare, and an airport that handled a record 2.8 million passengers in 2025. For most of the buyers I work with, the deciding factor is how close the rivers, trails, and Bridger Bowl sit to an ordinary workday.
What industries are in Bozeman, Montana?
Bozeman, Montana has more than 40 optics and photonics companies employing around 1,000 people, one of the highest per-capita concentrations of that industry in the country. Montana State University spent $288 million on research last year, and Bozeman Health, the airport, and outdoor brands like Simms, Schnee's, and Oboz add to that base. Lattice Materials, a defense optics supplier here since 1989, is building an 80,000-square-foot plant off Prince Lane that opens in 2027. Gallatin County's average weekly wage runs about 15% above the statewide figure, with unemployment under 3%.
How much income do you need to buy a home in Gallatin County?
Buying a typical home in Gallatin County takes a household income of around $180,000 a year, and a study commissioned by the City of Bozeman puts the figure even higher inside city limits. The typical household here earns about $101,000, which is why so many buyers look at Belgrade, Manhattan, and Three Forks, where the same square footage costs meaningfully less.
