Scientists Put Quantum Entanglement on Autopilot. The Strange Role of the Bath

What if the environment around a quantum computer could help create and stabilize entanglement instead of destroying it? Researchers at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria demonstrated a quantum bath: a shared environment made from correlated microwave photons that autonomously entangles two separated superconducting qubits. The experiment confirms a theoretical idea proposed more than 20 years ago and could eventually help connect modular quantum processors. In this documentary, we explain why distant qubits are hard to connect, what entanglement does and does not mean, how active protocols use measurement and post-selection, how a correlated microwave bath transfers quantum correlations into qubits, how quantum tomography verifies the state, and why the current result is a proof of concept rather than a quantum internet. Important context: the prototype currently transfers about 10 percent of the bath's available entanglement and uses specialized cryogenic laboratory hardware.
