John Belushi | SNL, Comedy Movie Legend, Tragic Fall

John Belushi burned brighter and faster than almost anyone in comedy history, leaving behind an influence that still shapes how comedy is performed and remembered. In this episode of Why Are You Laughing?, we examine Belushi’s rise from the counterculture comedy scene to his explosive success on Saturday Night Live, where his physical intensity and total commitment made him a breakout star. The episode also looks at his transition to film, including Animal House and The Blues Brothers, and how his larger-than-life persona became both his greatest asset and his undoing. Rather than mythologizing Belushi or reducing his story to excess, this episode explores why his style felt so new at the time, how it rewired expectations for comedy performers, and what his short career reveals about fame, pressure, and the costs of becoming a symbol before you’re ready for it To support the podcast BlindMike.net #johnbelushi #snl
