WADO 1280 New York - Jocko Henderson - 1964 - Radio Aircheck

WADO 1280 New York - Jocko Henderson - 1964 - Short Radio Aircheck This aircheck features the one & only Jocko! In his radio days, Doug “Jocko” Henderson was renowned for his rhythmic patter and for riding the rails. He spent seven years commuting by train each workday between New York City, Where he spent time on WADO, WWRL, & WLIB, and Philadelphia, where he hosted shows on WDAS & WHAT. His unique delivery—part preacher, part poet—combined rhyming, rhythm, and a smooth-talking style that helped shape the emerging genre of rock and roll and laid the groundwork for rap and hip-hop. Known for his trademark space-themed intro, “Eee-tiddly-ock, this is the Jock,” Jocko became a cultural icon to a generation of Black listeners during a time when Black voices were largely absent from mainstream media. In his spare time, Jocko hosted a television sock hop, “Jocko’s Rocket Ship Revue,” that was admired even by the competition across town at “American Bandstand.” “Jocko had a delivery that was unlike anybody else on the air,” said that competitor, Dick Clark. Jocko’s shows weren’t just entertainment—they were community events. He used his platform to promote civil rights, support Black musicians, and uplift his audience with messages of pride and empowerment. Beyond the airwaves, he also hosted live stage shows and was an early promoter of artists like James Brown and the Supremes.
