What if the Christian life isn't primarily about getting to the destination, but learning to delight in the journey? Most of life is lived in the middle—not in the miracle moment, not yet in the testimony, and not at the finish line. It's lived in getting the kids ready for school, going to work when you're tired, paying bills, waiting on answers to prayer, and trusting God when life feels ordinary. Hebrews 12 speaks directly to faith where we actually live. The Christian life isn't simply about surviving until we reach the finish line; it's about learning to enjoy the One who walks with us every step of the way. I was reminded of this during our most recent family vacation. Some of our favorite memories weren't the destinations we planned but the unexpected moments along the way. Like the time I confidently asked two girls at a rest area, "Alright girls, are you ready to go?" only to discover they definitely were not Ava and Isla! Or the day we couldn't find a taxi back to our cruise ship, so we squeezed onto a bus where I ended up folded into a tiny seat designed for someone much smaller than me. Those weren't planned moments, but they're some of the moments we'll probably remember the longest. Isn't that often how life works? We can become so focused on arriving that we miss what God is doing along the way. Yet God is just as present in the delays, detours, laughter, uncomfortable moments, and unexpected conversations as He is in the victories we celebrate. Hebrews 12:1 says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses..." The word "witnesses" comes from the Greek martures. These aren't people judging our pace; they're people who have been where we are. The word "therefore" points us back to Hebrews 11 and the men and women who lived by faith. Abel worshiped faithfully, Noah obeyed before he saw results, Abraham followed God without knowing the destination, Sarah trusted through delay, and Moses chose obedience over comfort. Hebrews 11:13 says, "These all died in faith, not having received the things promised." Faith didn't always make their lives easier, but it made their lives meaningful. Their stories remind us that God has been faithful before, and He will be faithful again. You are not running alone. Hebrews 12 also tells us to "lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely." The Greek word for weight, onkos, refers to unnecessary bulk or something that slows us down. Not everything weighing us down is necessarily sinful. Sometimes it's comparison, people-pleasing, overcommitment, unrealistic expectations, or simply being too busy to pray, rest, and enjoy God's presence. These things may seem harmless at first, but over time they drain our spiritual strength. That's why Jesus says, "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Grace doesn't say, "Try harder." Grace says, "Come to Me." We have to ask ourselves, What am I carrying that God never assigned? You can't run freely while carrying unnecessary baggage. Sometimes delight returns when we simply learn to travel lighter. And there is tremendous freedom in knowing that Jesus is both the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. He started your story, He walks with you through the middle, and He will finish what He began. Your faith doesn't depend on perfect performance, and your failures don't surprise Him. Hebrews reminds us that Jesus endured the cross "for the joy that was set before Him." His joy wasn't based on an easy journey. It was based on what He knew was beyond the suffering—redemption, restoration, and the people He came to save. So Church, delight doesn't mean the journey is easy. It means Jesus makes the journey meaningful. This week, lay down what is weighing you down, slow your pace, fix your eyes on Jesus, and trust His grace for the long run. Don't become so focused on the destination that you miss what God is doing along the way. The delays, detours, ordinary days, laughter, waiting, and even difficult seasons can become sacred ground when Jesus is with you. 🕊️ Delight isn't just waiting at the finish line.
