Our trip to Washington, DC from May 12 - May 21, 2025. We found a beautiful campground in Lorton, VA, about 24 miles south of DC. While traffic around DC can be heavy at times, we chose the option of driving to a Metro station and riding in on the train. (HINT: While the closest one to the campground is Franconia-Springfield, that one is a main hub and parking is in a multi-story parking garage, which is not truck-friendly! We chose to drive a little farther to the Van Dorn station, which was much less busy with a large ground-level parking lot.) We spent our first night of travel at a RV-Overnighters host in Grantsville, MD, a very pleasant boondocking spot! Got there too late for dinner, but I was able to buy some fresh cheeses in the gift shop - yum! We then met up with our good friends, Chris and Don, who we have known through our Florida trips over the years. Since our timeshare there was severely damaged last fall in the hurricanes, it is now closed, so we decided to meet up with them at their home in Edgewater, MD. We were able to set up our camper at the Elks Lodge in Edgewater, since they are members. We spent a great couple of days with them, as they showed us around Annapolis and entertained us in their beautiful home. From there, we drove about an hour around the DC beltway and then south to the Pohick Bay campground, where we stayed for the next four nights. The main purpose of this trip was to join our son and his family for the college graduation of our granddaughter, Julia. That was filled with events, culminating in the George Washington University 2025 commencement on the National Mall. It was truly a memorable occasion, and we were so happy we are able to be there for it! And so proud of Julia! But wait, there's more! We have some camping friends who live in Virginia, Irene and Richard, so we invited them to join us - and they did! Although we were splitting our time with them at the campground and with our family in DC, we had some good quality time to catch up with them, which is always a pleasure!
