Step back into Britain’s golden age of steam with this affectionate Pathé-style railway newsreel, filmed at the Watercress Line in Hampshire and Didcot Railway Centre in Oxfordshire. “Steam’s Second Chance” celebrates the magnificent locomotives, historic stations and dedicated people keeping Britain’s railway heritage alive. Presented with an enthusiastic period-style narration, the film combines footage captured during several visits and steam events to tell the story of preservation—from the Victorian pioneers to the final generation of British Railways steam. Our journey begins on the Watercress Line, the preserved section of the former Mid-Hants Railway running between Alresford and Alton. Opened in 1865, the line became famous for carrying locally grown watercress to markets in London. Today, its steep gradients, beautifully restored stations and engineering works at Ropley provide an impressive showcase for Britain’s steam railway heritage. Leading the action is the Watercress Line’s flagship locomotive, Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class No. 35005 Canadian Pacific. Built at Eastleigh in 1941, this powerful express locomotive returned to service in 2025 following an extraordinary fourteen-year restoration. The film also features LSWR T3 Class No. 563, an elegant Victorian express passenger engine built at Nine Elms in 1893, together with Furness Railway No. 20. Dating from 1863, Furness No. 20 is Britain’s oldest operational standard-gauge steam locomotive—a remarkable survivor from the earliest years of railway development. Representing the closing chapter of everyday steam is British Railways Standard Class 5 No. 73156. One of only five surviving members of its class, this impressive locomotive demonstrates the power and practicality of the final standardised steam designs built for British Railways. At Ropley, locomotives pass beneath the original King’s Cross footbridge seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Removed during the redevelopment of King’s Cross station, the bridge now enjoys its own second life at the Watercress Line. The journey concludes at Didcot Railway Centre, where the Great Western Railway lives again among the original engine shed, water columns and towering coal stage. GWR No. 1450 recalls the delightful tank engines and auto-trains once seen on quiet country branch lines. Look out for dramatic locomotive pass-bys, billowing steam, footplate crews, carriage-window views, coal being prepared and Didcot’s historic servicing facilities. This is a modern tribute created from original heritage railway footage and presented in the style of a vintage British newsreel. It is not an original British Pathé production.
