Material Archaeology: Structural Decay and the Synthesis of Industrial Patina

Abstract painting is an investigation into the physical evolution of a substrate. In this studio session, I examine the synthesis of structural modeling media, salvaged industrial elements, and the controlled application of reactive resins to create a surface defined by deliberate decay. This study explores the "Archaeology of the Canvas," documenting the process of forcing a crackle topography—a physical representation of structural breakdown—and integrating wooden elements to anchor the composition. By employing a rigorous layering process to simulate the authentic oxidation of metals, I aim to construct a surface that echoes the weathered history of urban environments, a concept deeply influenced by the architectural decay I encounter in my travels through Paris. Core explorations: Structural Topography: Utilizing crackle-inducing modeling media to construct a complex, high-density base. Industrial Integration: Incorporating structural wooden elements to introduce a distinctive, tactile dimension to the composition. Synthetic Oxidation: The methodology of utilizing mineral pigments to achieve an authentic, weathered rust aesthetic. Resin Application: The strategic use of epoxy resin to accentuate depth, gloss, and structural detail within the weathered surface. This inquiry focuses on the tension between constructed order and organic decay, examining how we can honor the beauty of material transience through precise, artistic intervention.
