Darling is one of Paul McCartney’s most passionate vocal performances, recorded during in April 1969 throught August of that same yaer. The song stands out for its raw emotion, inspired by the 1950s style ballads Paul admired. Paul began writing Oh! Darling in December 1968, aiming to capture the feel of a classic, heartfelt plea. He rehearsed the track extensively during the Get Back sessions, often on piano alone, though the full band with Billy Preston did rehearse the track a few times at the end of the sessions. The Beatles recorded the basic track on April 20th 1969, with Paul on piano/lead vocals, George Harrison on the Fender Bass VI, Ringo Starr on drums, and John Lennon on guitar. Billy Preston was also present at this session and played on a few takes of Oh! Darling, but the final take, take 26, didn't feature Billy. On April 26, Paul, George and John returned to Oh! Darling to record vocals - Paul was ultimately unsatisfied with his own performance and work on the song stopped for three months. I featured these early vocal tracks at 13:41. Paul returned to Oh! Darling mid-July 1969, doing one vocal take per day until July 23, when he finally was satisfied with his performance : "I mainly remember wanting to get the vocal right, wanting to get it good, and I ended up trying each morning as I came into the recording session. I tried it with a hand mike, and I tried it with a standing mike, I tried it every which way, and finally got the vocal I was reasonably happy with. It’s a bit of a belter, and if it comes off a little bit lukewarm, then you’ve missed the whole point. It was unusual for me, I would normally try all the goes at a vocal in one day." John, Paul and George finished work on Oh! Darling on August 11 recording their backing vocals, which was John's last session as a Beatle.
