Building and Strengthening the Organic Inspector Workforce

A recording of a session at the Fall 2026 Pre-NOSB meeting held virtually. At past NOC events, farmers have emphasized how much the inspection experience matters. For many, the annual inspection is their most significant interaction with the organic certification system. An inspector’s agricultural knowledge, communication skills, and judgment can shape both farmers’ experience of certification and confidence in organic integrity. Building on the strong foundation of established inspector training programs, this session highlighted emerging models that can complement existing approaches, expand pathways into organic inspection and certification review careers, and help fill gaps in access and preparation. We explored college- and institution-based training, accessible asynchronous online models, and how promising approaches developed through the Transition to Organic Partnership Program can be sustained.
