Gainesville is finally in the win column. After opening the 2026 high school football season with road losses against the top-ranked teams in Georgia and Illinois, the Red Elephants returned home to City Park Stadium and defeated McEachern 20-10 for their first victory of the season. Gainesville (1-2) relied on a suffocating defensive performance to slow down a McEachern team ranked No. 8 in Class 7A and No. 13 overall in Georgia. The Red Elephants held McEachern (2-2) to 249 total yards — including just 72 yards rushing — while consistently putting pressure on quarterback Brenton James. Linebackers Darryn Williams and Chance Davis helped lead the Gainesville defense. The victory was a major step forward for first-year Gainesville head coach Santavious Bryant and a Red Elephants team that had already faced defending national champion Buford and Illinois powerhouse East St. Louis. After coming up short in close situations earlier in the season, Gainesville found a way to finish this one.
