Devotion to Writing: You Don't Need To Take Another Writing Workshop

You don't need more workshops. You don't need to read anymore craft books. These don't teach you the most important thing about writing: getting to the page, listening, and writing daily. If you want to write but never begin. If you are stopped by doubts and fears, no amount of learning is going to help you write. The remedy is to write. In this video, Devotion to Writing talks about cultivating a relationship with writing, and, more importantly, with yourself as a creator. Writing requires this relationship. It takes time to write. It isn't easy. There are endless excuses for not writing. If you want to write, all that matters is showing up and doing it. Writing is an act of will. It is a discipline. The same as working out, or meditating. You don't need to learn more. You don't need to be better, or have more talent. You simply need to devote yourself to the practice of writing. You will learn along the way. Establish a writing practice. Then read your books and attend workshops. Just don't depend on these to get you over your fears and doubts. Don't ask these to silence your inner critic.
