You do not need a certification to be a dog trainer. No US state licenses dog trainers, and no certification is required by law anywhere in the country.
That sounds like freedom, and it is also the problem. Because dog training is unregulated, there is no floor: anyone can use the title regardless of what they know. The two credentials that carry the most weight are the CPDT-KA from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) and the Accredited Dog Trainer credential from the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). The CPDT-KA is an exam of 200 multiple-choice questions with a $425 application fee as of 2026. The IAABC assesses case studies, scenario responses, and documentation of your applied work, for a $225 fee.
Here is what almost nobody tells you first: neither credential will let a beginner apply. The CPDT-KA requires a training log of at least 300 hours of paid or volunteer dog training experience in the last three years, 225 of which must be hands-on training hours, plus an attestation signed by a credentialed professional. Training your own dog does not count. The IAABC route asks for two or more years of experience.
And neither organization teaches you anything. The CCPDT provides no curriculum, and the IAABC states plainly that it does not provide the training that leads to your credential. That gap is where an actual education comes in.
This video covers what is legally required, what the two credentials really are, what it takes to qualify, and which step comes first.
