Born on January 1, 1923, in Delhi during British India, he hailed from a Rajput family of the Rao clan in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a devout household, he pursued education at Islamia College in Lahore and started as a tehsildar (tax officer) in Burewala, Punjab. Early on, he engaged in Islamic activism with Majlis-e-Ahrar-ul-Islam, serving as its Burewala president, and joined the Sufi order under Maulana Abdul Qadir Raipuri, becoming one of his khalifas after spiritual training. A turning point came in 1944 at age 22, when he visited Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi and met Tablighi Jamaat founder Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi. Captivated by its focus on personal reform and dawah, he committed fully, spending time at the Markaz learning the six principles: Kalimah (faith declaration), Salah (prayer), Ilm and Zikr (knowledge and remembrance), Ikram-e-Muslim (respect for Muslims), Ikhlas-e-Niyyah (sincerity), and Dawah (invitation). Within six months, he quit his job to devote himself entirely. The 1947 partition brought chaos; Haji Sahab migrated to Pakistan in 1948, enduring a dangerous journey from Delhi to Lahore, marked by faith and divine protection as per accounts. Settling near Raiwind, he founded Madarssa Arabia and became one of the first five to promote Tablighi teachings in Pakistan. His role grew over the decades. In 1992, at the Raiwind Ijtema—a massive annual gathering—he became the third Ameer of Pakistan's Tablighi chapter, succeeding Haji Muhammad Bashir and Haji Shafi Qureshi. As a global Shura member and later de facto leader, he emphasised apolitical spiritual renewal, travelling worldwide to revive Sunnah practices. Under him, the Ijtema became one of the largest Muslim assemblies after Hajj. His influence earned rankings like 14th on The Muslim 500, impacting over 150 countries. Living modestly without children, his Sufi roots added depth to his work. On November 18, 2018, at 96, he passed in Lahore from dengue and illness. His Raiwind funeral drew thousands, with tributes from leaders like Pakistan's PM. His 70+ years of dedication left a void, but his legacy of sacrifice and sincerity endures, urging us to carry the torch of faith. إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." O Allah, forgive him, raise his rank among those who are guided, and take care of those he leaves behind him. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds; expand his grave for him and illuminate it for him. Indeed to Allah Alone belongs what He took, and to Him Alone belongs what He gave, and everything with Him has an appointed time; thus, be patient and hope for Allah’s reward. O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him. Protect him and pardon him. Grant him an honourable reception and widen his entrance. Wash him with water, snow and ice, and purify him from sin as a white garment is purified of dirt. Exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Hell-Fire.
