Enough sunlight lands on this planet in about ninety minutes to run everything humanity does for a year. Not a year of electricity — everything. So the question is not whether there is enough. It is why a sheet of glass on a roof turns any of it into electricity at all, and why, after seventy years, it still throws most of it away. That last part is the interesting bit. A good panel converts about a fifth of the light that hits it. The other four fifths are not lost to cheap manufacturing or dust on the glass. Most of that loss is required — written into the physics before anybody builds anything, and calculated in 1961, before the technology got anywhere near it. The four questions: • HOW LIGHT BECOMES ELECTRICITY — Pure silicon is useless: every electron is bonded and nothing can move. So manufacturers take carefully purified silicon and deliberately contaminate it, one atom in a million, twice, in two different ways. What that builds is a permanent electric field with no moving parts. • WHY MOST OF THE LIGHT IS THROWN AWAY — Silicon has a threshold. Photons below it pass straight through the panel like a window. Photons above it hand over the surplus as heat within a fraction of a nanosecond. Shockley and Queisser worked out the ceiling in 1961: about 33% for a single junction, and the best cells ever made now sit a few points below it. • WHAT IT COSTS TO BUILD ONE — Silicon is sand, and sand is free. Six-nines purity is not. Furnaces at 1,800°C, distillation, days of deposition, a single crystal pulled from a melt, wafers sliced thinner than paper. Then: how long before a panel repays the energy that built it? • WHY WE ARE NOT RUNNING ON IT — Not efficiency. Not price. Timing. The largest supply arrives at the smallest demand, and grid operators have a name for the shape that makes. Named in this video: William Shockley and Hans Queisser, 1961.
