IF YOU DON’T DANCE, YOU DON’T PASS Bachatas del Corazón · Songs of Remembrance Some moments seem small while they are happening… Until one day, we realize they have become memories we will carry forever. “If You Don’t Dance, You Don’t Pass” was born from one of those moments. One evening aboard a cruise ship, a Latin band began to play on the fifth floor overlooking the ocean. My mother sat nearby watching; my sisters and I started dancing, and people walked through the area on their way to dinner, the bar, or simply somewhere else on the ship. And suddenly, without planning it, I stood in the middle of the walkway and created a new rule: “If you don’t dance… you don’t pass!” And one by one, they danced. The waiters. The people working. The ones heading to dinner. The young. The older ones. The ones who knew how to dance… And especially the ones who said: “But I don’t know how!” It didn’t matter. One little step was enough. For a few seconds, we were no longer strangers. Nobody cared about age, where we came from, or where we were going. There was only music. Laughter. Movement. And people giving themselves permission to play again. That little moment eventually became this song. Because perhaps we cannot change the life of every person who crosses our path… But sometimes we can give someone thirty seconds of joy. Thirty seconds to forget what they were worried about. Thirty seconds to laugh. Thirty seconds to move their body. Thirty seconds to remember what it feels like to simply be alive. And perhaps that, too, is a way of planting a seed.
