Castro Laboreiro is a village and a former civil parish in the municipality of Melgaço in the Viana do Castelo District, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Castro Laboreiro e Lamas de Mouro.[1] It is in the mountain range of the Laboreiro. As of 2001 the area had 726 inhabitants. The name derives from Castro, a hill fort, and Lepporariu, "of hares", a Latin name from Roman times. Castro Laboreiro é uma vila portuguesa do concelho de Melgaço, situada na Serra da Peneda, planalto de Castro Laboreiro. A antiga freguesia, com 89,29 km² de área e 540 habitantes (Censos 2011)[1], situa-se na vertente nordeste da Serra da Peneda e na vertente oeste da Serra de Laboreiro[2]. A sua densidade populacional era 6 hab/km². A freguesia foi extinta (agregada) pela reorganização administrativa de 2012/2013,[3] sendo o seu território integrado na União de Freguesias de Castro Laboreiro e Lamas de Mouro. Foi vila e sede de concelho entre 1134? e 1855. Era constituído apenas pela freguesia da sede e tinha, em 1801, 1284 habitantes e, em 1849, 1512 habitantes. Foi novamente elevada a vila em 12 de Junho de 2009.[4] Curral do Gonçalo, um lugar na freguesia de Castro Laboreiro, fica situado a uma altitude de 1166 m, tornado-se o 2º lugar habitado de mais elevada altitude em Portugal.
