In 2024, Yeoncheon County was officially designated as an East Asian-Australasian Flyway Network Site (EAAF 159). Located in the inland border area at the heart of the Korean Peninsula, Yeoncheon serves as a major migration route and an ecological highway for countless migratory birds.
A wide variety of birds can be observed during the spring and autumn migration periods, with the massive autumn raptor migration offering a magnificent spectacle. Grey-faced Buzzards and Eastern Buzzards are particularly abundant.
This video captures Grey-faced Buzzards (Butastur indicus) traveling along the skyways of Yeoncheon during the autumns of 2025 and 2026. Most of these scenes were recorded right from my yard during backyard birding.
