Was Amelia Earhart's plane found at Nikumaroro? The Taraia Object was most likely trees, the Purdue expedition says. What the records show. For six years, a shape in the lagoon of Nikumaroro, a remote atoll in Kiribati, was the newest lead on Amelia Earhart's lost Lockheed Electra. On October 19, 2026, the Taraia Object expedition (Archaeological Legacy Institute, Purdue Research Foundation and Purdue University) announced its answer: most likely a collection of large trees on the Taraia Peninsula's sandspit, with a shiny carbonate veneer. This video rebuilds the story from the records: the Itasca's radio log from July 2, 1937 (National Archives), the 157-337 line of position, the castaway hypothesis and its evidence, how the Taraia Object was found in satellite images, what the doubters said before the trip, the survey itself, and what the team found instead, including a steel tube about 30 inches long.
