A doctor shakes your shoulder. He isn't here to be kind. He's here to protect an investment. Spend one day as a gladiator in Pergamon, AD 158, and meet the young physician who kept the fighters alive: Galen, later doctor to emperors. Find out why gladiators were called "barley men," what the bones of Ephesus reveal about their diet (and the ash drink), why the most famous gladiator line was spoken only once, and not by a gladiator, and who really held the power behind the arena. 📚 SOURCES Ancient texts Petronius, Satyricon 117: the gladiator's oath ("to be burned, bound, beaten, and killed by the sword"). Pliny the Elder, Natural History 18.72 and 36.203: gladiators as hordearii ("barley eaters") and the ash drink. Suetonius, Life of Claudius 21; Tacitus, Annals 12.56; Cassius Dio 60.33: the naumachia on Lake Fucine, AD 52, and the only recorded "morituri te salutant." Galen, Methodus Medendi (Method of Medicine), book 10: his work as physician to the gladiators of Pergamon. Modern studies and articles Lösch, S., Moghaddam, N., Grossschmidt, K., Risser, D. The "day" is a storytelling device: no source says Galen woke gladiators personally. Galen's "5 deaths vs 60" is his own claim, so treat it as a boast, not a statistic. The "one in eight" death chance per fight is a modern estimate; other scholars give higher figures. 🎬 ATMshow: stories from different times and peoples.
