I started working on this video after filming "Orang Singapura" (   • Orang Singapura (Make it Right for Singapore)  ) at Sungei Road Market in 2017. It began with casual chats with the vendors—and before I knew it, I kept returning, again and again, both before and after the market closed. During my final shoot day last month, I discovered that my main interviewee, Dr. Wong Chee Meng, had a personal connection to the location. His father used to sell salvaged car spare parts left after the war here as a teenager. He was the only breadwinner, and the market helped feed the family. Chee Meng himself came to Sungei Road mostly for books. His most treasured find? A book on Teochew nursery rhymes—something rare and now lost to time. And for the curious: the $20,000 diamond mentioned in the video? It was going for $5. That’s Sungei Road. It wasn’t just about the goods—it was the people, the spirit, and the thrill of stumbling upon the unexpected. I took my time for this video because it isn’t a job—I wanted to know how the vendors are doing now. I’ve also uploaded two older heritage pieces of mine, one on Siglap and another on Bukit Brown. Both were commissioned works nearly a decade ago. These 3 videos revolve around the theme of "Moving". Bang! Bang! is self-funded.
