Farook College – Shabnam Noorjahan controversy: What did the students actually complain about, and how was the issue presented in the media? In this video, we react to Dr Arun Kumar’s reporting on the controversy surrounding teacher Shabnam Noorjahan and the complaints raised by students. Students have alleged that the teacher imposed her personal beliefs and atheistic views on them and made remarks mocking religious beliefs and religious dress, including hijab and niqab. However, in his reporting, Arun Kumar presents the issue in a manner that, in our view, gives insufficient attention to the students’ allegations and places greater emphasis on defending or explaining the teacher’s side. We examine the reporting, compare it with the allegations raised by the students, and point out what we believe are important omissions, selective presentation and inconsistencies. Was the students’ complaint represented fairly? Were their concerns properly addressed? Was the teacher’s version given disproportionate importance? And what does the original controversy actually tell us? In this video, we go through the reporting and expose what we believe is a one-sided presentation of the Farook College issue.
