This solo pipa piece is inspired by the classical text Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) and depicts the mysterious creatures found within its pages. The composition currently consists of four distinct movements:
《Nine-Tailed Fox》:
This movement depicts the Nine-Tailed Fox from the Southern Mountains section of Shan Hai Jing, which is believed to be near modern-day Wuyi Mountains. The music carries traces of Chu folk songs. The Nine-Tailed Fox is a mystical creature with nine tails and has appeared in various legends with different personas: initially a neutral beast, later a symbol of power, and eventually a seductive demon. The Nine-Tailed Fox's changing forms reflect the shifts in human nature. This piece showcases the pipa's diverse sounds and techniques to portray the fox’s mysterious and ever-changing presence.
《Luan Bird》:
This movement describes the Luan Bird from the Western Mountains section of Shan Hai Jing, believed to be located in the modern Liupan Mountains in Gansu. The music employs a Persian scale, as the Luan Bird is a beautiful five-colored bird, resembling a phoenix. Its appearance is a symbol of peace and prosperity. The composition is filled with fast note sequences, symbolizing a festive atmosphere and the Luan Bird’s joyous flight.
《Fei》:
This movement describes the Fei from the Eastern Mountains section of Shan Hai Jing. The Fei is a one-eyed, snake-tailed, white-headed ox. Wherever it passes, no grass grows, and great plagues spread across the land. The music maintains an intense and powerful energy throughout, representing the imposing nature of the Fei.
《Jingwei》:
Jingwei originates from the Northern Mountains section of Shan Hai Jing. She was the youngest daughter of the Yan Emperor, named Nüwa, who drowned while playing in the Eastern Sea. After her death, she transformed into a bird named Jingwei, forever carrying twigs and stones in an attempt to fill the sea, protecting others from the same fate. This movement uses a lot of harmonics to depict the kind and graceful little princess dancing in the air.
Inspired by Shan Hai Jing, this solo pipa composition explores various mysterious creatures and emotions through its movements. The performer is encouraged to choose the order of the movements based on their imagination and emotions, creating a fantastical musical journey for the audience.
