In this ground report from Badesatti village in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, we explore “Niva Duwad Te,” a public awareness and community outreach initiative by Sukma Police aimed at bridging the communication gap in remote tribal villages affected by Naxalism. Once part of the sensitive Red Corridor, these areas are witnessing efforts to build trust between local communities and the police through village Chaupals, direct conversations and an understanding of people's needs. From introducing villagers to new technologies, games, toys, bags and clothes to listening to their concerns, the initiative seeks to strengthen community engagement and bring development closer to remote areas. Badesatti holds special significance as 11 Maoists from the village surrendered before the police on April 18, 2025. This report captures the initiative's objectives, the ground realities of tribal villages in Bastar, and the hopes of local residents for a better future. What does life look like in a village moving away from Naxalism, and can initiatives like Niva Duwad Te help build lasting trust?
