The first lifeboat to leave the Titanic had room for 65 people. It left with 28.
About 700 people survived the sinking, and every one of them saw something the ship's officers never planned for: a flat black sea, an absurd number of stars, a brilliantly lit ship slowly going under, and then the sound of over a thousand people in the water.
In this video, we follow the survivors from the last quiet minutes before the iceberg to the moment the Carpathia pulled them out of the Atlantic. Why were so many lifeboat seats empty? What did they see and hear from the water? Why did the nearby ship never come? And why did so few boats go back?
📌 KEY FACTS
• Lifeboat capacity: about 1,178 seats for more than 2,200 people aboard
• Estimated survivors: roughly 700
• Time of sinking: about 2:20 a.m., April 15, 1912
• Rescue ship: RMS Carpathia, arriving in New York on April 18
• The wreck was found in 1985 by Robert Ballard, with the two halves nearly a third of a mile apart
