This mission, a joint venture between ISRO and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), aims to explore lunar volatile materials, including lunar water, near the Permanently Shadowed Region at the lunar South pole. The Chandrayaan-5/ LuPEX mission is the fifth mission in the Chandrayaan series and will be launched by JAXA using its H3-24L launch vehicle. It will carry the ISRO-made lunar lander and the MHI Japan-made lunar rover. This mission also involves scientific collaboration between ISRO, JAXA, ESA, and NASA, with instruments focused on the in-situ analysis of lunar volatiles. The LUPEX mission is also a precursor to ISRO’s lunar sample return mission and will help pave the way for sending India’s first astronaut to the moon by 2040. The delegation also explored potential collaboration in robotic arm technology, scientific satellites, and joint research activities between the two nations. The team visited ISRO’s facilities at the Satellite Integration and Test Establishment (ISITE) of the U.R. Rao Satellite Centre to discuss future plans.
