A construction worker named Juan Chonillo died on the twenty-ninth floor in 2017; the company responsible pleaded guilty to manslaughter and paid a $10,000 fine, the maximum New York State law permitted. The building is still leaning, still empty, still the subject of more than two dozen active lawsuits, and as of 2025 the estimated repair cost exceeds the building's entire original projected sellout value.
