Between 1869 and the 1970s, Britain sent an estimated 130,000 children to Canada and Australia to work as unpaid labour. Many were told their parents were dead. Many of those parents were alive, and had been promised the arrangement was temporary.
The scheme was run by respected charities, backed by the British government, and described at the time as "child rescue."
This is the story of the British Home Children: how the system worked, why brothers and sisters were deliberately separated, how children were renamed and cut off from every adult who might have helped them, and how it took one social worker in Nottingham, starting in 1986, to force governments on both sides of the world to finally acknowledge it.
